The author of the book Foods That Fight Disease and a registered dietitian Leslie Beck says that incorporating the right foods into our meals on a regular basis can be reduced our risk for developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cataracts, Alzheimer's and many cancers. The following are five of the hardest-working foods. They are great for everyday nutrition and each is rich in natural substances that block disease and lengthen life.
Spinach- When it comes to vitamins, minerals and antioxidants such as lutein and zeaxanthin it's hard to beat this green leafy vegetable. It can protect against cataracts and macular degeneration, which are common causes of severe vision loss. Spinach is also high in calcium and vitamin K, it is also great for strengthening bones.
Cranberries- It is packed with bacteria-fighting anthocyanins. It also benefits the heart by inhibiting the build-up of LDL (bad) cholesterol.
Oats- It's a whole-grain that delivers cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber and energy-yielding carbohydrates without spiking blood sugar levels. Oats also keep blood pressure in check.
Black beans- Packed with protein, fiber and nutrients such as magnesium, iron and folate, these legumes keep the heart happy by controlling cholesterol and blood pressure.
Walnuts- It contain significant amounts of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. They're also full of plant sterols (lower LDL cholesterol), magnesium, copper, folate and vitamin E.
